Winners of the NAACP’s 2018 Essay and Poetry Contest recognized at MLK Breakfast

Three students were recognized Monday morning at the annual NAACP MLK Breakfast held at Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces. The students were winners of the NAACP’s 2018 Essay and Poetry Contest.

Senior Andrew Angel from Centennial High School won a $200 gift card and a plaque for first place in the essay and poetry contest. He won second place last year.

Fellow Centennial High School students Kaden Taylor and Bianca Alonsa won second and third place respectively. Both received gift cards and a plaque as well.

Branch treasurer of the Doña Ana County NAACP , Alonzo Moore said, “The judges felt enlightened by the depth and sensitivity of each of the essays and poems submitted to the contest. Based on these submissions, there is no doubt that Dr. King’s influence will carry on for generations to come.”.

Superintendent Dr. Greg Ewing was the keynote speaker at the event. He delivered as speech on the importance diversity in the LCPS system and the challenges minorities face with the prevalence of racism in today’s society.
