Doa Ana County commissioners approve $10 million road improvement project

The Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved a massive county road renovation project with an estimated cost of $10.2 million.

“This county can afford this project,” said Doña Ana County Manager Fernando Macias.

The two-year project will tackle the renovations of 19 public roads and 12 privately owned roads in all five districts. Macias told county commissioners the money will come from reserves, but he predicts those savings will be replenished by other funding sources throughout the project.

“We are not going to jeopardize, in any manner, the credit rating of the institution, because we are not touching any of the reserves that are necessary and required by law,” Macias said.

The County identified the dozen privately owned roads as needing renovations because of the immediate public safety needs of those who live and travel on the roads.

“This puts us on solid footing to address those kinds of unusual circumstances,” said Commissioner Billy Garrett, representing district 1.

“We’re not asking you to open up the floodgates to every private road in the county,” Macias said.

The resolutions addressing the improvements attracted almost unanimous support from constituents who spoke about the need to renovate the roads.
