Child abuse charges for Hatch father accused of DWI with sons in car

A Hatch father was charged with child abuse after allegedly driving while intoxicated with his two sons in the car, according to authorities.

Leonardo Granandos, 30, was charged with two third-degree felony counts of child abuse and misdemeanor counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated, open container and impeding traffic.

Las Cruces Police officers pulled over Granandos Friday, March 30 after noticing he was reportedly swerving in lanes on Solano Drive. Granandos was given a field sobriety test after the officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the car and two young boys, ages 8 and 10, in the back seat.

Officers also found an open box, and several cans of beer in the car. Granandos’ sons were taken into their mother’s custody.

Granandos was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he’s being held without bond.
