Moms work almost 100 hours weekly, study finds

Working or stay-at-home, moms are inundated with nonstop tasks, and a recent survey showed most work the equivalent to 2.5 jobs.

A Welch’s survey showed that moms work 98 hours per week, averaging out to 14 hours per day.

Tiffany Devez is a mom to a 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, in addition to a job as an administrator.

“At work, it’s calm and I’m sitting down,” said Devez. “It’s more relaxed than when I’m at home.”

The survey, posted on workingmother.com, reported that moms start working just before 6:30 a.m., and don’t stop until around 8:30 p.m. Devez agreed that her work as a mother is 24/7.

“Last night my kids crawled into bed with me then I’ve got feet in my face,” said Devez. “Cooking and cleaning, chasing after them and breaking up fights — I’ve got one potty training,” said Devez.

UTEP professor Jonna Perrillo said the work raising her 7-year-old and 10-year-old doesn’t ease up the older they get, but that the responsibilities just change.

“The younger they are the more dependent they are on you,” said Perrillo. “They had (fewer) extracurricular activities so there was less hustle after school.”

Perrillo said her job is the normal 9 to-5, allowing her more flexibility.

She says she has the ability “to be able to take them to the doctor, to often be able to pick them up from school, which is not a luxury that a lot of people have.”

Just for reference, there are 24 hours in a day, 168 in a week, and moms work about 100 of them.
