Las Cruces middle school student headed to Scripps National Spelling Bee

A middle school student in Las Cruces is out to prove she is the best speller in the country. Kristina Martos is a 7th grader at Lynn Middle School. Next month, she’ll be headed to Washington, D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “I’m pretty excited about it,” Martos said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Even though she finished as runner-up at the Las Cruces Public Schools Spelling Bee, she still earned a shot at competing at the national level. She applied for an open spot on the national competition and was selected out of hundreds of applicants. Martos says she’s ready to represent the City of the Crosses. “I will study as much as I can that way I can represent Las Cruces and give them a good title,” Martos said. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is on May 27th.
