EPPD: Drug deal leads to assault; suspects involved in high-speed chase

Two men involved in an aggravated assault during a drug deal led police officers on a high-speed chase from East El Paso to the Northeast, police said.

Police arrested 18-year-old Joshua Borrego and 21-year-old Edgar Monroy shortly after midnight on Thursday May 31, 2018.

Police officers were initially responding to an assault call involving a man with a gun on the 10000 block of Honolulu on the East Side. When officers arrived, they learned the occupants of a 1982 Chevrolet Silverado parked down the street were involved in the assault, police officials said.

The officers attempted to stop the truck, but the driver allegedly fled to Northeast El Paso. Police said the truck “flipped over” when the driver struck a curb in the 9400 block of Railroad.

The Gang Unit was called to assist with the investigation and learned Borrego and Monroy got into a fight during an illegal narcotics transaction.

During the altercation, Borrego allegedly pointed a handgun at the victims, only described by police as three 20-year-old males and a 17-year-old boy. Monroy allegedly threatened the victims with a knife.

Gang Investigators were able to recover a handgun and a knife inside the Chevrolet pickup, police said.

Police charged Borrego with four counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Evading Arrest or Detention in a Motor Vehicle. His bonds totaled $425,000.

Monroy was charged with four counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. His bonds totaled $400,000.
