Authorities arrest wanted sex offender in Las Cruces

Authorities in Las Cruces arrested a man wanted for Sexual Penetration of a Minor Wednesday morning.

U.S. Border Patrol agents in Las Cruces were assisting Las Cruces Police after officers pulled over a man who was allegedly providing a fake name.

Border Patrol ran his fingerprints and identified the man as 35-year-old Jose Roberto Chavez.

While trying to identify Chavez, Border Patrol learned that he had a previous immigration history and a warrant out of Las Cruces for Sexual Penetration of a Minor.

He was transported and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility, pending criminal proceedings.

Police say Chavez was driving with an open container and was unable to provide any form of identification when he was pulled over, and that’s when Border Patrol was called for assistance.

Chavez is a Mexican citizen by birth and has been processed for entry without inspection.
