Family of good Samaritan killed Saturday speaks to ABC-7

Police say a man was killed after stopping to check on cars that were involved in a crash near I-10 and Airway Boulevard.

While helping the parties, police say a passing car lost control, slid and struck 25-year-old Apolinar “Polo” Ramos III, killing him.

Shortly after the accident, Ramos aunt Mary Luevano got a phone call from a family member.

“She said ‘He didn’t make it Miss Mary.’ And I said, ‘Who?’ And she said, ‘Polo,'” Luevano said.

“We’re all torn apart … inconsolable … my sister ..,” said Luevano, whose sister is Ramos’ mother.

Luevano said Ramos was the male figure in his home.

“His nephews are already asking for him. They are saying ‘Where’s my uncle Polo, when’s he coming back,'”, said Luevano, who showed a picture of Ramos letting his niece paint his nails.

Luevano told ABC-7 Ramos was coming home from work where he worked as security. She said helping people was his second nature.

Police say Ramos stepped out of his car to check on the two people who had crashed.

“That’s him. He would do anything to help … to see if anybody needed help, and he was there regardless if it was a small little thing, he always was there,” Luevano said.

Police said a 1984 Oldsmobile car lost control and hit Ramos. The driver of the Oldsmobile, 27-year-old Gerardo Molina, and the passenger, who was only described as a 24-year-old woman, were treated for minor injuries.

Although gone too soon, family members said they already have the best memories.

“His heart and his big hugs that he used to give me … for being a big guy he had a big heart,” Luevano said.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for Ramos funeral costs.
