Report: Design errors at new William Beaumont Army Medical Center total $177 million

Errors in design at the new William Beaumont Army Medical Center total more than $177 million, according to a new report by the US Inspector General.

The hospital is under construction in Far East El Paso County. Work began in August 2013, and nearly five years later, the hospital is nowhere near completion.

In December 2017, ABC-7 first reported the federal government demanded answers on why the new hospital was over budget. Those findings were released Tuesday.

As of March 2018, the project had 978 contract change requests, 132 canceled change requests and 453 engineering changes.

Other factors have contributed to the delay.

Weeks after construction began, the contractor hired to lay the foundation filed for bankruptcy.

In 2014, a construction worker died, halting work for nearly a month.

On top of that, there have been countless leadership changes from delivery teams to stakeholders.

The report released Tuesday states the costly project is a learning lesson for all military projects going forward.
