Another big movie will film in Las Cruces with major Hollywood actors
Another movie will be filmed in Las Cruces, but this one will be special.
“Walking with Herb,” led by a team with Tony-winner Mark Medoff, will be locally produced, edited and financed.
“You can never bet on what a movie’s going to do, just do the best you can while you can,” Medoff said.
The movie will feature George Lopez, Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell.
Local banker Joe Bullock wrote the novel that preceded the movie about a man inspired by God to do the impossible.
“God contacts him through this computer and tells him he’s an example to the world by winning the master’s golf tournament,” Bullock said.
The movie will have a crew of about 100 people, with 20 – 30 members coming from New Mexico State.
“There isn’t much that we don’t have in Las Cruces,” said producer and director Ross Marks, who is also the executive director of the Las Cruces International Film Festival.
Marks said it’s crucial that his father-in-law, Medoff, has stayed in Las Cruces for decades to produce high-quality films.
“Unlike most people who experience success and go off to greater pastures, he’s stayed in town and tried to bring the film business to him,” Marks said.
“When people ask me why we stayed here instead of moving on to greener pastures, this is the greener pasture to us,” Medoff said.
It’s been an exciting time for film in Las Cruces, with Clint Eastwood’s visit this summer.
“You can’t count on Clint Eastwood coming to town, but you can count on the local filmmakers just building films from the ground up,” Marks said.
The movie will begin filming in September, Marks said. He estimated the movie will be completed by Easter. From there, the team will take their movie to several film festivals to determine how and when it will be distributed.
