Starr Western Wear opens new store at Sunland Park Mall

The owners of Starr Western Wear and city officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the store’s newest location at Sunland Park Mall.

The mall has been hit hard by the online shopping trend and many stores, including some anchor tenants, have closed. Starr Western Wear is filling the void left by the closure of the Macy’s at the mall.

Starr Western Wear Owner Enoch Kimmelman told ABC-7 he is not concerned about the online shopping trend affecting traditional brick and mortar retailers.

“We chose Sunland Park Mall, even though it seems like it may be slowing down. For us, really, it was not a big issue because of the convenience factor for our core customer,” Kimmelman said. “And much to our delight, we’ve seen great traffic in the first week that we’ve been open.”

The opening of Starr Western Wear’s new location created 50 new job positions, something Kimmelman says is a priority for the company.

“Providing employment and jobs here in El Paso is a big priority for us. It’s a big source of pride for us,” he said.

The Sunland Park store is the biggest Starr Western location in El Paso. It has two stories full of men’s, women’s and children’s western style clothing, western style bedding, and a toy corral.

Starr Western Wear has locations in Downtown El Paso and the East Side.
