Police: Parent struck and killed by vehicle in school parking lot; 3 students injured

El Paso Police are investigating a deadly pedestrian accident in the parking lot of Tippin Elementary in West El Paso.

A spokesman with the school district’s police department told ABC-7 a mother is dead and three students were injured. “This is a very tragic accident,” the police spokesman said.

Two of the three children injured in the wreck were related to the woman killed, police said. The three children were seven years old.

The preliminary investigation revealed an elderly man in a vehicle accelerated and struck the woman and children in the parking lot. Police are looking into what caused the man to accelerate. Police did not clarify whether the man backed up into the mother and children or if he struck them while driving forward.

In a statement posted on Twitter and on its website, El Paso ISD said it appears the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake.
