LCPD: Woman arrested after using sickle to threaten roommates

Angelina Serna, 22, of the 1500 block of Branding Iron Circle, is charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after Las Cruces police say that she used a sickle, a short-handled farming tool with a semicircular blade, to threaten her two roommates on Sunday morning.

Las Cruces police were dispatched to the report of an assault on Sunday, Aug.19 around 9 a.m. that occurred at Serna’s home. Investigators learned that Serna shares the residence with a couple, a man and woman.

On Sunday morning, Serna reportedly armed herself with a sickle and approached the couple’s bedroom demanding that they leave her home. Investigators were told Serna entered the couple’s bedroom with the sickle raised over her head and advanced on the woman. The woman told investigators that Serna pushed her onto the bed and threatened her with the sickle.

The woman’s boyfriend, who had been in an adjoining bathroom, heard the commotion and entered the bedroom. He told investigators that he grabbed Serna’s arm and physically removed her from the bedroom. Investigators believe Serna swung the sickle which struck and penetrated the closed door.

The couple braced the doorway with a piece of furniture while they called 911. LCPD officers arrived to find Serna outside the residence. The sickle was located in a grassy area a short distance away.

Serna was arrested and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center. She is currently being held on a $1,000 cash or surety bond.
