Community Champions: Mayfield passed first test, but Del Valle awaits
The Mayfield football team is already just one win away from matching their total in 2017.
The Trojans appeared to be a completely different team in their opener in 2018, beating Atrisco Heritage (Albuquerque) on the road Saturday by a final of 45-13.
Atrisco Heritage was unable to stop Mayfield’s run game as the Trojans racked up 364 yards on the ground.
Additionally, Mayfield’s defense stepped up, recording two safeties and a pick-six.
After posting a 2-8 record in 2017 and missing the postseason for the first time in nearly a quarter-century, the Trojans are off to a great start, but a tough test awaits Friday.
Del Valle will host Mayfield Friday night in what’s become a rare battle between a team from Las Cruces and a team from El Paso.
Del Valle is coming off a 10-2 season last year in which they posted a perfect 8-0 district record.
The Conquistadores and Trojans also met early last season, with Del Valle clawing its way to a tough 7-0 victory.
Friday’s game could tell us a lot about both teams, and a win for the Trojans would be huge for Las Cruces teams in general. Three of the four public school teams in Las Cruces played solid football in week one with Las Cruces High trouncing top-rated Manzano and Centennial looking impressive in a win over Rio Rancho.
