Minerpalooza marks the start of UTEP’s fall semester, football season

The University of Texas at El Paso officially kicks off its football season Saturday against Northern Arizona, but the party starts a whole day earlier.

Minerpalooza is being held on Friday in front of the Sun Bowl.

The evening of food, games and live music typically marks the start of the fall semester.

UTEP officials released a talent lineup that includes headliner Paul “DJ Pauly D” DelVecchio from MTV’s hit reality show “Jersey Shore.”

Drake Bell, a singer best known for his starring roles on Nickelodeon’s “The Amanda Show” and “Drake & Josh,” DJ Orange Calderon and local Spanish rock band Volta will also perform.

Admission is free and open to the public.

UTEP officials expect a crowd of between 25,000 to 30,000.

The family-friendly events include an inflatable zip line, a climbing wall and Pete’s Playground, a dedicated children’s play area near the north entrance of the Sun Bowl.

Adult activities include a beer and wine garden and attractions from some of the event sponsors. Eight food trucks also will be on site.

Free parking will be available around campus starting at 5 p.m. Parking will be free in the Sun Bowl and Schuster parking garages; parking in the Glory Road Parking Garage costs $10.
