Fort Bliss Sergeant sentenced to 60 years for sexual abuse of a child, other charges
A Sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Bliss faced sentencing today, following an investigation by the FBI involving the sexual assault of two minors on base.
34 year-old U.S. Army Sergeant Ron Mitchell Dunbar was sentenced on Tuesday, October 17th, to 60 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised released, for aggravated sexual abuse of a child and receipt and possession of child pornography.
Wednesday’s sentencing for Dunbar comes after he pleaded guilty to charges on April 19th.
By pleading guilty, Dunbar admitted to sexually assaulting two minors on Fort Bliss between 2007 and 2009.
In addition, Dunbar admitted on September 15th, 2017, to obtaining multiple photos he requested from Fort. Bliss resident Faith Mitchell Chavez of two minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
Chavez has since pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to produce child pornography, and faces between 15 and 30 years in federal prison when sentenced in November.
U.S. Attorney John F. Bash and Special Agent in Charge Emmerson Buie Jr. of the FBI El Paso Division were the officials who announced Dunbar’s sentence.
“Crimes against children violate the most innocent and helpless members of our community. The FBI will continue to work tirelessly to investigate allegations and crimes such as the ones in this investigation,” stated Special Agent Buie.
