Chiefs vs. Rams game moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles

A battle of two 9-1 teams was supposed to take place Monday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Instead, the Chiefs and Rams will now play in Los Angeles at the Coliseum.

Some players had reportedly suggested they might sit out the game at Estadio Azteca due to poor field conditions. The stadium has hosted a number of concerts and soccer matches recently and had been battered by heavy rainfall. There were concerns the field would not be up to NFL standards come Monday.

“Until very recently, we had no major concerns,” said senior NFL executive Mark Waller. “But, the combination of a difficult rainy season and a heavy multi-event calendar of events at the stadium have resulted in significant damage to the field that presents unnecessary risks to player safety and makes it unsuitable to host an NFL game.”

The Rams were required by NFL regulations to keep their home stadium available as a backup.

The team had left Los Angeles on Monday to train at high altitude in Colorado Springs. They are expected now to remain in Colorado Springs and return to Los Angeles on Saturday.
