Study: Heavy meals increase chance of heart attack
Heavy meals may trigger heart attacks, especially for those who have heart disease, according to a new study.
The study found heart attack risk jumped four times in the two hours after a large meal.
Researchers interviewed nearly 2,000 patients shortly after they had a heart attack to find out what they ate just hours before.
Of them, 158 reported having a heavy meal during the 26 hours before the attack, the study showed. 25 patients had the meal within two hours before the attack.
For those with heart disease concerned about portion size, Del Sol Medical Center cardiologist Dr. Oscar Muñoz says safety is within the colors.
“Avoid anything that is white. Rice, tortillas, bread etc.,” Muñoz said. “Increase the consumption of greens, reds and yellows. Those are the vegetables.”
