Only on ABC-7: High-speed chase suspect denied bond

The Anthony man who led authorities on a high-speed chase in Dona Ana County appeared before a judge on Friday.

Lewis Delgado, 37, had a bond hearing inside the district courthouse in Las Cruces.

Delgado appeared wearing an orange jumpsuit and with shackles on both his hands and feet.

The judge denied Delgado bond saying Delgado is a danger to the community.

Authorities say Delgado is the driver who led New Mexico State Police officers on a high-speed chase in Dona Ana County on January 30th.

The chase began after Delgado allegedly blew right past a Border Patrol checkpoint in between Las Cruces and Hatch, because authorities say his vehicle had a stolen license plate on it.

The chase reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

At one point during the chase police say Delgado sped into oncoming traffic.

During Friday’s hearing, Steven Chavez, an officer with New Mexico State Police, testified about his interview with Delgado following the chase.

Chavez explained what Delgado told him about his decision to drive into oncoming traffic.

“He had told me that he was told by a friend that if you’re chased by police, to get them to stop chasing you, travel against traffic and they’ll stop,” Chavez said.

The chase came to an end on I-25 after Delgado lost control of his vehicle when he ran over some tire spikes that had been placed by law enforcement.

Delgado was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges that include aggravated fleeing, possession of meth and driving under the influence of both drugs and alcohol.
