EPPD now say man in custody did not crash into business, did not threaten people with gun

An El Paso Police spokesman now says a man taken into custody in El Paso’s did not crash into a business and did not threaten people inside the business.

Earlier in the day, police sent out the following alert: “Preliminary reports of male subject crashed vehicle into business. Threatened persons inside with a gun. At this time, subject is holed up inside the business. Area is closed.”

The incident was first reported by police at about 9:40 a.m. Friday. It happened at an auto service shop on the 4900 block of Doniphan in El Paso’s Upper Valley.

At about 9:55 a.m., police reported the man was in custody. A police spokesman told ABC-7 the man drove into one of the auto bays at the shop. When officers arrived at the scene, they located the man sitting inside his truck with a gun. The officers said the man did not threaten anyone.

“The individual had warned all the occupants of the shop that he did have a gun, although he made no threats to anybody in the shop. The only threat was to himself,” police spokesman Darrel Petry said. “Officers were able to engage the man in conversation and eventually disarmed the man.”

The man was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation. No charges were filed, police said.
