A man is arrested following an-hours long SWAT standoff in Las Cruces

A Las Cruces man has been accused of strangling his wife and punching his father during a Saturday morning incident. He was arrested early Monday after an hours-long SWAT callout.

Jesus Insurriaga Garcia, 25, is charged with a third-degree felony count of aggravated battery against a household member and a misdemeanor count of battery against a household member. He’s also charged with two counts of violating terms of his parole and one count of violating terms of his probation.

Las Cruces police said that shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic incident at the home Garcia and his wife share with his parents. Investigators said Garcia woke his wife by pulling her hair. He then reportedly accused her of infidelity and police said he attempted to strangle her.

Police said he then threw his wife to the floor and kicked her in the abdomen several times. Investigators believe Garcia picked her up, threw her on the bed and again tried to strangle her. While doing so, police said his wife struck the wall several times in an attempt at waking Garcia’s parents.

Garcia’s mother reportedly told police she slapped her son and tried to break them apart. Garcia allegedly left the bedroom, followed his father to another room and punched him at least once.

Garcia allegedly fled the home in is mother’s vehicle, which was later found abandoned on Highway 28 by a Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Inside the car, officers located Garcia’s ankle monitor that he was required to wear as a condition of parole.

A warrant was issued for Garcia’s arrest. He was located Sunday evening at a home on the 2300 block of Lester Avenue. He refused to exit the home and LCPD’s SWAT team was sent to the scene. After about two hours, Garcia was taken into custody early Monday morning and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center, where he’s initially being held without bond.
