SISD expands free supper meal program to their 7th school

The Socorro Independent School District has expanded its supper meal program to include the Desert Wind School Community. The Desert Wind school has kids from first to eighth grade.

The program will give free supper meals to any and all people from ages one to eighteen, and you do not have to be a student to receive a free meal.

Aggie Reyes, the SISD Nutrition Services Coordinator said, “Here at Socorro ISD We feel that there is a need to provide these types of services for the community and the children and its a great benefit for them.”

Reyes told ABC 7 that the program runs Monday through Thursday each week, and offers free supper not only to students of the school but anyone in the community who shows up hungry, she said, “”We begin serving after school which is after 3:15 and it’s open to the public, to the community, ages one through 18.”

Leticia Terrazas, the Principal of Desert Wind School, spearheaded the efforts to get the supper program implemented at her school, “I decided that we needed to have the supper program here at Desert Wind,” Terrazas said, “so I began talking to district personnel and began pushing, and it was great”

There’s also a meal viewer app, that parents can download right to their phone, so they can stay up to date on what their kids are eating. The app is free to download. You just find “MealViewer To Go” in the app store, search for your school, and a list of meals that are offered show up on the screen. The nutritional value of the food, allergens are also listed. There is a place where people can rate the meals they eat as well – that feedback is received by the school and they use it to plan their future meals.

“The greatest benefit is what it provides for our customers, and information you would find in a restaurant,” Reyes said, “is you know the calories, the carbohydrates, the allergies and all that is great in the society that we live in now.”

If a person is over 18 and would like to eat supper at the school they are able to purchase the meal for $3.50.

In order to qualify for the free supper program, 50% of the students at the school have to qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.

The free supper program is part of the Child and Adult Care Food Program, funded by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Since the Program began in 2017, SISD has served almost 98,000 free suppers to children in the community.

SISD schools already offer free breakfast at all of their schools.
