EPPD: Wanted fugitive attempts to load handgun while running away from officers
A wanted fugitive attempted to load a handgun as he was running away from Gang Unit officers who spotted him at a gasoline station in Northeast El Paso, said police.
Investigators charged Deshaun Montrill Williams, 38, with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon, Evading Arrest or Detention, Resisting Arrest Search or Transport, and Possession of Marijuana Under 2 ounces .
Police said Montrill was already wanted on two outstanding warrants for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group One.
Gang Unit officers spotted Williams at 9:20 a.m. at the Howdy’s at 11390 Gateway North, near McCombs .
Investigators assigned to the El Paso Police Department’s Gang Unit and the West Texas Anti-Gang Center arrested a man wanted on outstanding warrants Wednesday morning in Northeast El Paso.
As police and SWAT officers approached Williams, he ran away carrying a handgun, police said. Williams ran a short distance across McCombs , ” attempting to rack a round into the weapon as he fled, ” said police.
Williams eventually dropped the weapon and was caught by the officers after a brief foot pursuit.
Gang officers recovered the weapon Williams dropped, a Taurus 9mm handgun. Police said Williams had a brown leather waist holster in his waist band.
Williams was booked into the county jail on a $118,000 bond.
