Canutillo brewery wins international awards for its beer

It’s been dubbed “The Smallest Brewery in Texas” by its owner.

But, Sun Brewing is being recognized at an international stage for its beer.

“Even though this is a very small, artisanal brewery, the small guys can still make world-class beer,” owner and brewer David Slocum said.

Sun Brewing’s “Saison De Membrillo” and “100% Spontaneous Ale” recently won awards in their categories at the New York International Beer Competition.

“I’m ecstatic. It means a lot because it’s so small and we don’t have any investors or nothing,” Slocum said. “We’ve just got humble facilities.”

Slocum runs the company with his wife, Ana. It’s been open for nearly five years.

“I don’t have any mechanized mechanical equipment,” Slocum said. “It’s all done by hand.”

Slocum decided to open the brewery after being laid off from his job at Hewlett Packard.

“You have to have a certain amount of tenacity and fortitude to keep going towards that goal. That was my goal, and it’s still my goal — I want to make the best beer in the world,” Slocum said.

And loyal customers are thrilled to see their favorite brewery get recognition.

“There’s a reason I’m a regular here and not over there,” long-time customer Robert Gallegos said. “He’s just unique in every way.”

Slocum said he knows brewing is his calling, and he’s proud of his beers.

“The accolade means it’s one of the best in the world,” Slocum said.

Sun Brewing is located on the 100 block of Canutillo La Union Avenue.
