Bishop Seitz gives Pope Francis prayer cards of migrant children who died in U.S. custody

El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz presented Pope Francis two prayer cards of migrant children who died in U.S. custody.

The Diocese of El Paso tells ABC-7 Seitz is in Rome this week for a conference on human trafficking.

A spokesperson for the Diocese said Seitz had the chance to briefly meet with Pope Francis.

The two prayer cards are for Jakelin Caal and Felipe Gomez Alonzo.

Caal, a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl, died at the El Paso Children’s Hospital last December. Caal and her father were apprehended in Antelope Wells, New Mexico. After Caal’s father told agents she was sick, they examined her and then flew her to El Paso where she died. The autopsy report revealed she died of a bacterial infection.

Gomez Alonzo, an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy, was apprehended with his father in El Paso last December. An autopsy report revealed he died of the flu on Christmas Eve at a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of El Paso said Seitz was in Rome from Monday – Friday.
