Fabens High School student found dead in Juarez

Fabens High School freshman Alexis Sanchez Cardenas was found dead Friday as he visited family in Juarez.

Our news partners at Channel 44 report 17-year-old Sanchez Cardenas and 16-year-old Alan Reyes were reported missing Thursday evening. Their bodies were found dumped in the valley of Juarez Friday morning.

Their families went to the site where the bodies were found and said they had no idea why the two teenagers would have been killed.

“One of our students was in Mexico visiting his parents and passed away,” the Fabens ISD wrote in a statement. “Alexis Sanchez-Cardenas was a freshman at Fabens High School. He will be greatly missed by friends and family and will always be remembered for his smile and kind heart.”

Fabens ISD Superintendent Veronica Vijil remarked that Sanchez Cardenas had not been enrolled in the district very long.

“He’s a quiet student, and it doesn’t really matter whether they’re quiet or not,” she said. “It’s a student and a great loss for us that we no longer have in our family.”

Fabens ISD will be providing counseling services once school resumes Tuesday, following the deaths of both Sanchez Cardenas and a teacher in a separate incident.
