Early voting for May election begins on Monday

Early voting for the May 4 election begins on Monday.

Residents will get to decide whether to keep a piece of land in Northwest El Paso as open space, rather than have it developed.

The more than 1,000 acre piece of land is referred to as Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone 12 (TIRZ 12).

The City of El Paso voted to create a TIRZ in this area to help incentivize development. Preservationists in the area rallied against the city, to keep the space as open land, since the TIRZ contains the popular Lost Dog Trail.

A group of residents successfully gathered enough signatures for two initiative petitions to get an item on the ballot that would preserve the land in perpetuity.

Other key races include, three board of trustee seats for EPISD, three board of trustee seats for EPCC, and city council seats for San Elizario.
