El Paso grandma, grandkids beat the heat handing out free lemonade to neighbors

Tuesday’s El Paso heat wasn’t an issue for one grandma and her grand children who handed out free lemonade to neighbors in east El Paso.

Maria Elena Lopez is retired and spends her summer afternoons watching her six grandkids and trying to keep them busy.

“Sometimes the kids get bored and I wanted to do something that would help them from being bored all the time and something to keep them off their phones and iPad’s,” said Mrs. Lopez.

Not only would this lemonade stand keep the kids busy, it would also teach them a few valuable lessons.

“This also teaches them the value of money. It teaches them responsibility and how to have fun together,” said Mrs. Lopez.

The kids, all dressed in yellow, set up shop at around 11:30 in the morning. Some holding signs waving down customers.

Others served the homemade lemonade to customers and accepted whatever donation was given to them.

Temperatures were already in the mid 90s when the kids started selling, but grandma made sure she kept her grandkids hydrated in the heat.

“They all had water bottles with ice and cold water and since we’re close to the house they would rotate they would stay out here and some would go inside to keep cool,” said Lopez.

As for what the kids plan on doing with their hard earn cash? Some plan on using their money for school supplies and others plan on saving some money and giving some of it to their parents.

For Grandma Lopez, seeing the smile on all of her grandkids face made being out in the heat all day, enjoyable.

“Just seeing them happy makes me so happy. They want tod o it all day but Grandma is tired,” said Lopez.
