A high school runner is hoping to make a statement when he competes at a national competition in California.

Evan Rubio is entering his senior year at Ysleta High School where he competes on the track and field team.

During his junior year, Rubio fell one place shy at the district track and field meet, and he failed to qualify for the regional UIL track and field meet.

He’s hoping to do better this upcoming season, and he took it upon himself to join a city league to hone his skills.

While running for the El Paso Wings, Rubio started to learn the steeplechase, and he grew to love the steeplechase.

At regional competition in Arizona, Rubio finished in 3rd place in the 2000-meter steeplechase.

Rubio had a time of 6:55, which was enough to qualify for nationals.

Rubio does need some help to pay for the trip, and he’s hoping people will donate to his cause and to his dream.

“It’s that thought of wanting to get better, wanting to pursue your dreams,” Rubio said. “I’m not that type of teenager that sits down and relaxes. I’m actually trying to go somewhere in my life, trying to prove a point to myself.”
