‘We don’t know if we’re going to make it home’: Texas 1st responders honor fallen Fort Hancock fire chief

FORT HANCOCK, Texas -- Dozens of west Texas first responders honored a fallen brother Saturday - the chief of the Fort Hancock Fire Department in Hudspeth County.

"Sometimes we respond to calls and we don't know if we're going to make it home," said David Huitron with the San Elizario Fire Department.

On Wednesday night, Fort Hancock Fire Chief Manuel Galindo Jr., 71, was killed in a rollover crash involving a fire truck, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

That same day, an El Paso firefighter was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash on Transmountain Road in El Paso.

"It was a very sad day for first responders," Huitron said. "Whenever you see us out there working car accidents, be cautious. Slow down."

Funeral services for Chief Galindo will be on Monday and Tuesday in Fort Hancock.
