3 UTEP employees diagnosed with virus attended Conference USA basketball tournament at The Star
EL PASO, Texas -- Three UTEP employees who recently tested positive for the coronavirus attended the Conference USA basketball tournament.
UTEP says the employees returned from an out of town event on March 12.
The tournament was held at The Star in Frisco.
Both the UTEP women's and men's teams each played their first round games of the tournament on March 11.
The tournament was cancelled the next day in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
UTEP stated on Twitter that the employees are all men, and that two of them had limited access to the Foster Stevens Center.
The Foster Stevens Center is the training facility for the UTEP basketball teams.
UTEP says the center has been isolated and that it is cleaned on a regular basis.
ABC-7 sent a list of questions to UTEP wanting to know if players and other employees who attended the tournament are being monitored or even tested for the coronavirus.
In a statement to ABC-7, a UTEP spokesperson could only say, “Out of respect for the privacy of the UTEP employees who’ve tested positive for COVID-19, the University is not releasing additional details.”
The university has said that one of the infected employees is in self-isolation and is recovering at home.
During a city news conference Friday, Dr. Hector Ocaranza with the El Paso Department of Public Health said the department has been in contact with city officials in North Texas to let them know about the exposure of Covid-19 at the tournament.
