White Marsh (WJZ) — An off-duty Baltimore County police officer was in the right place at the right time Monday, and their quick thinking helped catch an alleged serial bank robber.

Baltimore County identified the officer as E. Legge of the Woodlawn precinct. Police said Legge was inside the Bank of America bank in White Marsh when Fletcher Dorsett walked up to the counter next to him.

Dorsett reportedly left moments later and the clerk said she’d just been robbed.

That’s when Legge jumped into action, chasing Dorsett across the parking lot and holding him until more officers arrived, police said.

“Our officer stepped into action, ran out of the bank, rance across the parking lot, and was able to apprehend the suspect and hold him there until a uniformed officer was able to arrive,” Jennifer Peach, of the Baltimore County Police Department, said.

The 51-year-old was also wanted for a bank robbery in Annapolis on Thursday and a number of other bank robberies in the Baltimore County area dating back to July, officials said.

The FBI had been trying to catch Dorsett for months. Officials said he robbed at least eight banks.

People who frequently visit the branch praised the officer for his quick action.

“That’s awesome. I’m retired military, I would love to help the police out. He did his job, he did everything he was supposed to do, it’s perfect,” Randy Zelman said.

Dorsett is being held without bail in Baltimore County.
