EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso man is jailed on animal cruelty charges after allegedly shooting one dog and brutally beating another that was just a puppy, authorities said Friday.

38–year-old Justin Free Millender was being held in the El Paso County Detention Facility on bonds totaling $7,500.

Millender allegedly "brutalized the animals after the puppy urinated on the couch," said Det. Diane Mack of the El Paso Police Dept, first shooting the adult pit bull he owned and then beating his 7-month old pit bull puppy.

Police said both dogs are currently under the care of a veterinarian and, despite their very serious injuries, are expected to survive.
