Otero County Prison leads New Mexico virus case growth for 2nd straight day
CHAPARRAL, New Mexico -- New Mexico health officials on Sunday reported 136 additional coronavirus cases and two additional deaths.
The increases raised the state’s total number of cases to 10,565 and the death toll to 469.
Of the new cases, 41, nearly a third of the total, involved inmates at the Otero County Prison in southern New Mexico. The facility has generated over 100 new cases this weekend, as it also accounted for about a third of the state's new cases on Saturday when it posted 64. That prison, to date, has had 684 infections and four deaths.
The were 18 new cases occurring Sunday in southern New Mexico's Doña Ana County for a total of 718. Among counties, it was second in new cases to the 30 reported in McKinley County in northwestern New Mexico.
McKinley County residents accounted for two of the three new deaths across the state, with the remaining fatality occurring in adjacent San Juan County. Those two northwest counties still account for almost half of the state’s cumulative cases - some of which is tied to a Navajo Nation outbreak.
