Storm sweeps Hawaii, brings threat of ‘catastrophic’ floods

HONOLULU (AP) — A strong storm packing high winds and extremely heavy rain across Hawaii has flooded roads and downed power lines and tree branches. And officials warned Monday of potentially worse conditions ahead. Gov. David Ige issued a state of emergency for all of the state’s islands Monday and Honolulu firefighters rescued five boys from a raging stream. The National Weather Service says the storm could prompt “catastrophic flooding” in coming days. Power outages and flooding were reported on the island of Maui, with more than a foot of rain in some areas. A weekend blizzard warning also was issued for the high peaks on the Big Island.
