‘It’s a little slow’: El Paso travelers expected record breaking Thanksgiving holiday traveling weekend

EL PASO, Texas -- After the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, many people were traveling back home.

People from all across the country headed to the El Paso International Airport Sunday for what experts were calling a record breaking traveling day.

According to Airlines for America, an airline trade organization, 3.1 million passengers were expected to hop on plane on Sunday alone, a 3.7 percent increase from 2018.

The Transportation Safety Administration prepared for what they also said would be a record breaking holiday traveling season.

TSA said agents expected 26.8 million passengers to walk through their check points across the country between November 22 to December 2.

TSA estimated 2.8 million passengers would be catching a flight on Sunday. On a regular weekday, TSA said agents screen about 2.1 million passengers.

Many passengers at the El Paso International Airport that spoke to ABC-7 said they were expected things to be much busier.

“Honestly, recently it's been very slow," said Mary Mena, an El Pasoan on her way to San Antonio to head back to school. "I’ve traveled where it's like lines out the door like for security but it's been really slow right now actually.”

“I actually thought the airport was a lot less busy for the holidays honestly," said Robin Aug, who just landed at the El Paso International Airport. "I was in and out of security out of Houston in like 10 minutes and yeah, here it's like nothing.”
