Caroline Garcia, Borna Coric get 1st titles in Cincinnati
MASON, Ohio (AP) — Caroline Garcia has generated momentum going into the U.S. Open in a week, capturing the Western & Southern Open women’s championship with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Petra Kvitova. On the men’s side, Borna Coric completed a rankings jump from 152 to 29 with a 7-6 (0), 6-2 win over No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. Coric beat five seeded players on his way to the title, including Rafael Nadal. Garcia was the first qualifier ever to reach the tournament final and clinched the victory when Kvitova sent a second serve return into the net. The 28-year-old French woman went into Sunday’s match with a WTA Tour-leading 26 wins since June.
