ABC-7 looking into health and environmental concerns at migrant camp

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- As more migrants continue to cross the border into El Paso, ABC-7 is speaking to health officials about the risk of diseases entering our community. Cases of COVID-19 and Chicken Pox have already been reported among migrants taking shelter outside Sacred Heart Church in Segundo Barrio.

On Thursday, we had scheduled an interview with Representative Tony  Gonzales near Sacred Heart Church, however, the congressman left abruptly before we could conduct the interview. He told ABC-7 he left because local law enforcement told him it was unsafe to be in the area due to the risk of disease.

"I recommend nobody go downtown. Nobody go to the Sacred Heart Church and the reason being is this: there's reports of Mumps, Measles, Tuberculosis and other diseases, bed bugs. What I've (heard) from law enforcement is that this is what they're seeing every day, and guess what, that's a bunch of diseases that are there, of course, you've got thousands of people that have traveled from all over the world making these different treks. So, I've got six children at home, so I don't wanna get sick, I don't want to get myself sick, I don't want to get my children sick," Gonzales told ABC-7.

ABC-7 has reached out to El Paso Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza for comment. Hear from him tonight on ABC-7.
