The meaning of Memorial Day

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An El Paso family spent their Sunday laying memorabilia on their loved one's grave at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.

"Really, Memorial Day is just about perspective," said Dominic Rossi as he visited his late father. We're able to celebrate and have fun, enjoy barbecues, have a good time and drink, enjoy music. Just because of all the sacrifice that everyone here has given their lives for."

General John Rossi served in the U.S. Army for 33 years and was a two-star promotable general.

"He actually committed suicide," said Rossi, in tears. "Definitely a shock. But I know there's others here who've done the same, but again, really just perspective."

Rossi said it was his father that inspired him to join the Army, and that brought them closer.

"Yeah, very close. Like I said, I was able to come to graduation while he was deployed. Spent a lot of time here while we were both in service, which is awesome. Not a lot of people get to do that," said Rossi.

Rossi's mother, Liz, added that she wants people to remember.

"Just don't forget about us. Those left behind," she said.
