Mosquitos Concern Local Health Experts

EL PASO, TX – All the standing water in the area has the potential of bringing another threat to the public, other than trash and debris.

The County is working to control mosquitos, which could carry the West Nile Virus.

El Paso’s vector control is fogging for mosquitos all over the Borderland. Current targets include Canutillo, the Upper Valley, Socorro, and parts of Central and Northeast El Paso.

It’ll most likely take weeks for the Borderland to dry out completely, but with one case of human West Nile Virus already confirmed, controlling mosquitoes becomes a major concern.

City-County Health Director, Dr. Jorge Magana confirms thata 63-year old man from northeast El Paso tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Dr. Magana tells ABC-7, it’s the first recorded case in El Paso County. He adds that the man is in serious condition and is being treated at an area hospital.

Officials warn people to avoid areas of standing water as best as they can.

Also, be sure to wear long sleeved clothes and pants, use insect repellent with deet, and avoid outdoor activity around dusk and dawn when possible.

Dr. Magana also warns that children and the elderly are among those who are highly susceptible in getting sick.

He adds, “we will succeed in facing this crisis in el Paso if we work together and if we are in constant communication and we educate ourselves and we follow proper recommendations from the health department.”
