EL PASO — In the wake ofa house fire that claimed the life of 3-year-old Jasmin Herrera and left her father, Jesus, recovering at the Lubbock Burn Center, an El Paso businessman made a donation to prevent further tragedieslike this.

Louie Palacios, owner of Five Start Automatic Fire Protection, donated 200 smoke detectors to the El Paso Fire Department Thursday.

He says he hopes to keep others safe this winter season by having the devices given to the elderly, disabled and low-income families in the borderland.

Fire officials said one of the contributing factors to Jasmin’s death and Jesus’ injury was the lack of smoke detectors in the home.
