Gas Theft On The Rise In East El Paso

EL PASO — Gas prices are at an all-time high and are beginning to impact crime in the Sun City.

Police officials say gas thefts are on the rise in the East Side. Thieves are resorting to a method known as “siphoning” to take gas out of gas tanks.

According to investigators, the thieves use part of a hose and stick it down a parked car’s gas tank. They then suck the gas out and it empties into another tank.

“We’ve noticed an increase in the reports of gas thefts in a very short period of time,” said Police Spokesman Darrel Petry, “the whole city is susceptible to this type of crime but it’s mostly been an issue in the East Side.”

Police urge residents keep their cars inside their garage or to park their cars inside their property instead of by the street curb.

If you do not have a garage you are urged to buy lock caps for your gas tank.
