Extreme Makeover’s Special Side Project Revealed

Written for kvia.com by Anchor/Reporter Stephanie Valle

EL PASO, TX — While thousands of volunteers ready themselves to tear down and build up the house of the Ruiz family in the Lower Valley, dozens of others are gathered on the west side, quietly preparing a small side project that is sure to personalize the home.

“At the Clayground” owner Sylvia Palmer tells ABC-7 Desert View Homes contacted her about designing tiles for the new Ruiz abode.

“We’re actually working on several different projects for the home that’s going to involve other tiiles and other pieces as well,” Palmer said, later adding that her shop will be behind at least three projects for the house.

At the Clayground is located at 5860 N. Mesa. The concept behind the shop is customers can pick out an unfinished piece of pottery, paint it as they like, and leave the glazing and firing of the pottery to the shop.

In order to ensure Palmer meets the week deadline, she has enlisted the help of family, friends, and even customers to paint the small tiles.

Palmer says her business complements the show’s goals.

“We offer personalized pieces, they do personalized homes, practically. So it’s a good fit.”

The actual finished tiles, design, and location in the home are not being revealed.

The projects will be unveiled during the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode featuring the Ruiz family on Sunday, March 15 at 7 P.M. MST on ABC-7.
