LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A federal jury has found David Ramos Arenas guilty of impersonating a Border Patrol officer.
Ramos Arenas was on trial in federal court this week on three counts of impersonating a peace officer.
The charge he was convicted of was for an incident where his girlfriend got a speeding ticket and he allegedly tried to get her out of it by telling the officer he was a Border Patrol agent.
He was found not guilty of the other two counts, which were connected to an incident where he allegedly pulled over a womanin Mesquite, N.M., and told her he was a Border Patrol agent.
Ramos Arenas faces 1-3 years in prison for the conviction. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
The jury in the case deliberated for three and a half hours before reaching the verdict in the trial that began on Monday.
Ramos Arenas was previously tried in district court, but the case ended in mistrial because jurors could not reach a verdict. He will be retried on one count of false imprisonment in Dona Ana County District Court. No date has been set for that trial.
