Concerned About Explicit TV Programming? There’s Help Available

Like most responsible adults, Shaun Felice is concerned about what flashes across the television screen in his home.

“There’s going to be a time where we’re going to be in the family room, playing spades and the kids are going to be flipping the TV channels,” Felice said. “I don’t want to get any crazy questions that I may have to answer.”

Felice said explaining to children the content on a channel such as Playboy is difficult.

“I noticed that there were subscriptions of the shows, which is fine for an everyday show,” Felice said. “But there’s some adult programming that is very explicit.”

If you cannot be in control of the remote control, Time Warner suggests subscribers block specific programming. Simply, hit the settings button on your remote. Then, select the ‘parental controls’ option at the bottom of your television screen. When prompted, set up and plug in your pin number.

From there, you can block shows several ways. You can restrict access based on a show’s rating or block an entire series. If you don’t want your children to watch a specific channel during homework time, restrict access by time slot or block entire channels.

Finally, make sure to block shows by title if you do not want the name of the program or a description of the show shown.

“The old joke of learning how to program your VCR applies to programming your TV,” Felice said.
