Parking Structure To Be Open In Time For Sun Bowl Game

Perhaps the only thing tougher than getting a ticket to the Sun Bowl game will be snagging a parking spot that day.

Fortunately for fans, a new parking garage with hundreds of parking spaces will open just in time for the big game.

“I’m thrilled because it will definitely alleviate a lot of the problems,” Jessie Bombach said. “You won’t have to be going around in circles looking for parking.”

Bombach said she has spent more than 15 minutes trying to hunt down a space.

“Parking is almost a nightmare in some cases,” said Laura Cruz-Acosta, the spokeswoman for Sun Metro. “We are very happy that it will be open to the public on Friday.

The parking garage will offer Sun Bowl fans an additional 400 parking spaces. It will cost each vehicle $10 to park in the garage, located right next to the Don Haskins Center. There will be no tailgating allowed inside the structure.

Inside there are two tile murals, tributes to UTEP’s glory days in basketball.

“That’s gorgeous,” Bombach said. “I just think that’s such a great tribute to Don Haskins.”

The garage will only be open to the public on Friday. When the structure officially opens in mid-January, it will also serve as a sun metro transfer terminal and eventually, an empty storefront on the ground level may offer even more options to travelers.

“I just think this is a great investment,” Bombach said. “Not only for the games, but later on for the year, for the different graduations.”
