3rd Child Dies From Injuries In Friday Fire; Mother Of Young Victims Opens Up About Deaths

A Northeast El Paso family is coping with the devastating deaths of three young children and their grandmother.

Sunday morning, the last surviving grandchild from the fire, 10-year-old Eboney Jones, was taken off life support, according to her mother, Camille Jones-Sanchez.

“It’s hard for me to let them go but they’re in a better place right now,” said Jones-Sanchez. The grieving mother spoke to ABC-7 during a candlelight vigil Saturday night.

It was at around 1:30 a.m. Friday that flames tore through a home on the 10100 block of Wolverine Drive. Five people were trapped inside when the fire broke out, including Jones-Sanchez’s three children, 9-year-old Deman, 10-year-old Eboney and 14-year-old Isaiah.

Their 55-year-old grandmother, Monica Matos, died on the way to the hospital.

“She was the first one who left so she welcomed them to heaven,” said Jones-Sanchez.

Deman was taken off life support on Friday and Isaiah was taken off life support on Saturday.

Monica Matos’s husband, 50-year-old Luis Matos is in a Lubbock burn center.

“It’s going to hurt for a while, but at least I have my family to help me through this,” said Jones-Sanchez as she leaned into sister-in-law Alicia Matos.

Jones-Sanchez said her children’s organs will be donated, a gesture that will carry on their spirit through a life saving sacrifice.

“These kids are going to live on and they’re going to save other lives,” said Alicia Matos.

If you’d like to help the family cover the funeral costs, there are two funds set up in the victims’ honor.

The first is at First Light Bank under the name “Luis Manuel Matos” and the account number is 9593606.

There is also a collection jar at First Convenience Bank inside the Wal-Mart in Northeast El Paso.
