Former NFL Quarterback Randall Cunningham Speaks In El Paso

Former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham spoke publicly about the death of his 2-year-old son Christian for the first time on Wednesday at the El Paso Marriott.

Christian drowned a year ago in a hot tub in the backyard of his home.

Cunningham spoke as part of the “2011 Respect the Water” luncheon for the El Paso chapter of the Drowning Prevention Coalition.

Cunningham, who is a pastor, said his faith helped him in times of grief.

“When I look at the death of my son, there was a time when we mourned because it was a very difficult thing. But there’s also a time to celebrate that he went to a better place than we are now,” Cunningham said. “I don’t believe in bad parents. … I believe there are good parents who sometimes make mistakes.”

Cunningham was awarded a key to the city and he and his son will have new streets named after them. A new street will also be named after Christian Castle, an El Paso boy who drowned at age 4.

Cunningham played for the Eagles, Vikings, Cowboys and Ravens.
