Las Cruces, Mayfield To Face Off In Decades-Old, Heated Rivalry

It’s one of the biggest high school football rivalries in the nation.

Both Mayfield and Las Cruces High spent Thursday getting ready for Friday’s big game at Aggie Memorial Stadium with pep rallies and other events.

Students, alumni and teachers gathered to cheer on their teams for the rallies.

“Being a senior, it’s a great deal. Hopefully we can come out with a ‘W,'” said Fernie Olivas, a Mayfield High School senior .

Another part of school spirit is sporting your teams colors.

ABC-7 spoke with a Las Cruces sports apparel shop about how seriously some fans take their sportswear.

“There are some die-hard fans that do not want the other mascot on the other team on that shirt, so have specifically shirts for Bulldawgs or Trojans. We even have the ‘hater’ shirts that is anti-Bulldawg and anti-Trojan,” said Brian Cox, Owner of Sports Accessories.

Cox’s shop has been printing and selling clothing for this game for almost 20 years, each year printing multiple styles on hundreds of items.

Many of the 20,000 to 25,000 people who are expected to attend the game will be sporting their teams colors to show their support.

For those who can’t make it to the big game, it will be playing live online. Just click on this link at 7 p.m. Friday.
