Police Seek Person Who Wrote Letter Threatening To Kill Cat

Dear pet owner, “We are going to catch (your cat), kill it very slowly, cut off its head and leave it on your door step.”

That is part of a letter a resident of the Casa De Soledad gated community in the Sonoma Ranch area of Las Cruces found, and police are looking for the word slinger.

Las Cruces Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000, and a private citizen is pitching in another $500 for information that leads to the identity and arrest of the person who wrote the letter.

Police said the resident of a home in the 3900 block of Sonoma Springs Avenue, who owns a cat, on Nov. 14 found the note, which contains vulgar language and mentions a threat to poison the cat if it is seen outdoors. The letter continues, “We are going to catch (the cat), kill it very slowly, cut off its head and leave it on your door step.”

Casa De Soledad at Sonoma Ranch is a gated community so the letter is believed to have been left on the pet owner’s door by someone who also resides at the residential complex.

Poisoning or torturing a pet is considered extreme animal cruelty in New Mexico and is a fourth-degree felony offense. If you have any information on the identity of the author of the letter you are asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a tip via text message to LCTIPS (528477). The Crime Stoppers number and text messaging services are operational 24 hours a day and you do not have to give your name to collect a reward.
